If I want to have a pattern carved into my rug do I need a certain kind of carpet?

The type of carpet you need depends on the pattern (or design) you want carved into your rug and “the look” you want to end up with. Usually, you would want to purchase at least a medium height, “40oz. plush” carpet. 40oz designates the “face weight” of the tufting material per square yard which typically dictates how dense the carpet is. (This weight number should not be confused with “total weight” which refers to the face weight PLUS the weight of the latex PLUS the backing material.) The higher the “face weight” and density the better the carpet will show your pattern and maintain its appearance.
When you go to your local carpet dealer to look at carpet tell them you want to look at a “40oz plush”. They will know exactly what that is.
